ANCONA – Every month a list was made for the prison workers. While scrolling through the names he didn’t see his and got upset. “I want to speak to the inspector,” asked a prisoner, 43 years old, Tunisian, detained in the Barcaglione prison. It was January 31, 2022, late afternoon and the prison police officer in charge of the list had already finished his shift. “You’ll do it tomorrow” was his colleagues’ reply. The foreigner, however, didn’t want to wait. He lost his mind and started banging on the bars. Then he threatened the officers, telling them “you bastards, I’ll break everything, now I’ll cut myself so I can go to isolation.” Finally he went up from the ground floor to the first floor section where he kicked a wooden service cabinet that contained gas canisters and ripped the socket of a freezer from the wall, breaking the wire and plate and making the appliance virtually unusable.

The prisoner ended up on trial for aggravated damage, before judge Francesca Grassi where yesterday, through his defender, the lawyer Antonio Gagliardi, he asked for the trial to be shortened. The alternative rite will be granted only if he pays for the damage caused, more than 200 euros between the destroyed locker and electrical socket. The hearing was adjourned to November 19.
