The head of Augustus is veiled and his universal message of peace to welcome the ‘Great Ones of the Earth’ to Puglia. It is the initiative of MArTA, the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, in view of the G7 summit which will take place tomorrow in Borgo Egnazia (Fasano), under the Italian presidency.
For its greeting, expressed in all the languages of the States represented in the forum, MArTA chose the precious marble that portrays the head of the emperor Augustus, dating back to the first half of the 1st century AD and discovered in Taranto in 1943. The portrait , exhibited in room
«After the dark decades of the civil wars, once he had achieved absolute power, Augustus – states the director of MArTA, Stella Falzone – presented himself to the Romans as the founder of the politics and culture of peace, promoting a campaign of religious and moral renewal, and showing himself as the respectful guardian of the institutional order, as Augustus himself tells us in his biography.”
«For this reason – he adds – he seemed to us to be the best testimonial of the message that we will send to the leaders of Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and to the leaders of the European Union. We wish them good work in this territory which is a crossroads of cultures and a meeting place for different peoples, as our archaeological heritage well represents.”
