There is turbulence in the never-launched Third Pole.

Not so much in reference to the bad relations between Calenda and Renzi – this would not be new – which became even more embittered after the failure to reach a quorum at the European elections, but rather in their respective parties in the aftermath of the vote.

Calenda, having acknowledged the failure, would like to reopen a dialogue with the Democratic Party, but not everyone is of this opinion, starting from the national deputy secretary and Piedmontese commissioner Enrico Costa who thinks differently.

Even more so after having sided with Cirio in the recent regional elections.

Costa and his men – particularly in the province of Cuneo – can boast of having achieved an excellent result with the Cirio List with the election of Marco Gallo, “Mister Preference”, as regional councilor.

The Ansa agency reports: “Enrico Costa, who is a former Forza Italia member, clashed with him precisely on this during the meeting with Calenda. And Mara Carfagna also asked her boss for an explanation. In short, by choosing this path Calenda could also reactivate the system of ‘changes of uniform’ that has always characterized centrists, it is commented in centrist circles”.

Luigi Marattin, a leading exponent of Italia Viva but critical of Renzi, reminds him of the mistakes of the past. “We need to rebuild a stable political perspective that can only resume from where, with one of the most serious errors in the history of Italian politics, it was interrupted in April 2023 with the unfortunate end of the Third Pole”.

Both Costa and Marattin seem not to resign themselves to the inevitable and would like to try to relaunch while waiting for the congresses of their respective parties which should take place in the autumn.

In the Cuneo area – where Action weighs much more than Italia Viva – the issue is not irrelevant, given the significant presence in the provincial administration and in the Municipality of Cuneo.

In the Province, under the direction of Luca Robaldo, a man close to both Cirio and Costa, the choice to be with the centre-right was clearly manifested both with regards to the CrCuneo Foundation and in the alliance with the centre-right in the regional elections.

It will be interesting to see what happens in September when it comes to electing the new provincial council.

Will the large coalition that today sees everyone except the Brothers of Italy hold up?

It is whispered that a third party temptation in Cuneo style – driven by Action with Forza Italia inside but without Pd and Fratelli d’Italia – is starting to spread and be the subject of evaluation.

The direction, once again, will be entrusted to Robaldo, whose presidency is not subject to renewal.
