A trickle of percentages fluctuating between just over 50% and just under the quorum needed to avoid a run-off. But, barring any twists and turns, it will be the second round that will decide who will be the next mayor of Lecce between Adriana Poli Bortone and Carlo Salvemini.
In this infinite electoral round, with a head-to-head vote between the two main protagonists of the race for Palazzo Carafa, the centre-right candidate in fact achieved 49.83% of the preferences and, although she defined the result as ”beyond her own expectations and a source of pride for the good electoral campaign experienced”, has already called on his electorate to make a further effort to return to governing the city after 7 years of Salvemini management.
Adriana Poli Bortone then underlined the data of the lists which, in the case of the centre-right, obtained 52% and which, in the event of success of the other party, would create the conditions to once again register the lame duck phenomenon, with the mayor who would not have a majority in his favor in the council.
For his part, the outgoing mayor who collected 46.9% of the valid votes counted since 2pm yesterday afternoon, ”the game is not over yet and we will have to go back to the polls” to establish who will be able to boast the title of mayor of Lecce, easing the tension with a joke: ”Maybe it will take the VAR…”.
”An appendix of the electoral campaign made up of another 14 days of commitment, passion and the hunt for the last useful vote to win the run-off and resolve the head-to-head between the two sides, without prejudice to the sacrosanct need for a recount in front of a election decided on decimals”, concluded Salvemini.
The recount appears more inevitable than ever after numerous canceled ballots were recorded in two sections of the ”Banzi Bazzoli” Scientific High School in Piazza Palio. A fact that led to requesting the intervention of the police to record what had happened in those polling stations.
