In Vicenza, a lawyer and his wife were killed in 1991

Justice reopens a double murder case unsolved for 33 years, that of the lawyer Pierangelo Fioretto and his wife Mafalda Begnozzi, which occurred in Vicenza on 25 February 1991.

A 58-year-old man, Umberto Pietrolungo, originally from Cetraro (Cosenza) was arrested by the police, by order of the investigating judge of Vicenza, because he was believed to be the perpetrator of the crime.

The turning point was communicated by the Vicenza Prosecutor, Giorgio Bruno.

After such a long time, thanks to the evolution of technologies linked to DNA and the interpretation of fingerprints, the Vicenza Prosecutor’s Office had the necessary elements to close the investigation after it (since there was no statute of limitations for the crime of murder) had been archived, although it continued to be followed in the expert phase with periodic examinations of the material collected by the Scientific Police.

Partial fingerprints on the silencer of a gun and DNA found in a glove used for the assassination made it possible to trace the alleged murderer.

Pietrolungo’s mug shots allowed some witnesses to recognize the man, even after more than 30 years. Pietrolungo was reached by the provision in Cosenza prison, where he is detained for other crimes.
