From 14 to 16 July, on the “Italo Falcomatà” seafront in Reggio Calabria, the sixth edition of the Festival of the Latin Sailing Tradition of the Straitpromoted byAncient Catonese Marine Association in synergy with the Reggio Sailing Club.

Lances and gozzi (depending on the type of stern, respectively: flat or rounded) with crews from Calabria, Sicily, Campania and Lazio, will cross their bows and slender sails along that mile overlooking the Reggio seafront.

The association is involved in a project for the relaunch and historical-cultural recovery of this particular type of sailing rig on boats built in wood by master shipwrights. A fleet of boats, also of considerable tonnage, provided for the carrying out of commercial exchanges and the transport of passengers between the Reggio and Messina banks before and after the war period. It was a fundamental activity for the economy of the coast and the hinterland.

Today, Latin sailing is experiencing an interesting moment of awakening, numerous gatherings in the various marinas of the central south, from Formia to Sorrento, passing through Pisciotta, Salerno, Gallipoli, Marsala, Porto Palo di Menfi and Reggio, arouse curiosity and passion in a growing number of people who want to experience the experience and emotion of sailing listening only to the voice of the wind and the noise of the wave breaking under the bow. Latin sailing, with its slow tempos and knowledge of the wind, the sea and its currents, recovers a dimension of the soul and beauty that the rush of these days of ours has made us lose. Latin sailing is good for your health! (rrc)
