Architectural barriers, the appeal of a mother from Lamezia to Occhiuto: ‘Unjust law, it is impossible for many families to access the bonus’

Lamezia Terme – “I am a mother desperate to observe my son’s life being inexorably compromised as leaving the house becomes more and more difficult.” It is a touching appeal launched by a lady from Lamezia Terme to the President of the Region Roberto Occhiuto to raise awareness of the highest Calabrian institution on the real-life repercussions of the crackdown on the bonus against architectural barriers established by a national law. The woman’s son, in fact, is suffering from progressive multiple sclerosis which effectively limits his mobility. An elevator outside the building would allow him to come into contact with the outside world, to go out, to recover spaces of normality in an already severely compromised existence. This, however, is no longer possible since the national rules on access to the so-called 75% bonus against architectural barriers have been modified in a restrictive sense, cutting out a large audience of potential beneficiaries, including Lamezia’s family. .

The woman’s voice today joins those who in recent months have raised themselves against a decision considered unjust and highly penalizing. “I am writing to you – states the lady in the letter delivered to President Occhiuto in April – to draw attention to a problem that concerns the quality of life of my son and of many other sick people like him. My need is to install an external lift to the condominium where we live, to be able to allow my son to go out directly in a wheelchair since he practically no longer has independent mobility on his legs and arms”.

“For now – he continues – the 75% bonus foreseen for the removal of architectural barriers is blocked. Therefore I am writing to you to ask for 75% to be granted because we do not have the possibility of anticipating the necessary sum. It is an injustice for those who already they struggle with serious pathologies and furthermore they cannot financially anticipate astronomical figures between 60,000 and 80,000 euros for the construction of the external elevators. The 7,000 euros of non-repayable contributions that the Calabria Region can provide are not sufficient to proceed with the construction I am a desperate mother and I trust that she will take my request into consideration.” The new national rules came into force with Legislative Decree 212 of 2023, published in the Official Journal on 29 December, which intervenes – in a restrictive sense – on the type of interventions allowed but also on access to credit transfer and invoice discount .
