GUIDONIA – Defibrillator damaged before inauguration, hunt for vandal

“To that lunatic who dismantled the defibrillator container last night and threw the pieces on the ground, I would like to explain that that “thing” is used to save human lives”.

The sign speaks for itself.

It was posted by some inhabitant of Montecelio on the wall of Piazza San Giovanni Evangelistathe center of the medieval village, where next Saturday 15 June at 10.00 is scheduled forinauguration of the first public defibrillator for Montecelioaccessible 24 hours a day by anyone who needs to use it.

The new life-saving PAD (Public Access Defibrillation) station was installed by “Volunteer for You – ODV”the non-profit organization chaired by Arturo Michele Masuccifor years involved in the project of a cardioprotected city which from 2018 to today has already installed three defibrillators in Villanova and one in Colle Fiorito, and which last Saturday 8 June has already trained around twenty people from Monticelle in the correct use of the system.

In Montecelio, however, the day of celebration was ruined by a vandal That on the night between Sunday 9th and Monday 10th June he forced open the illuminated and alarmed steel case inside which the defibrillator will be placed, a case that costs 600 euros.

In the “stunt” the unknown has damaged glass and the alarm went off, so he immediately disappeared, aided by the darkness of the night.

“Fortunately we were able to contain the damage and this act, although it fills us with bitterness, does not stop us, on the contrary, it pushes us to move forward with more determination”explains president Arturo Michele Masucci.

The damage sparked theanger of most Monticellesiconsidering that the defibrillator was purchased with a donation from the “Class of 1983” after a fundraiser on the occasion of the Patronal Festival.

The members of “Volontario per Te – ODV” then carried out the process to obtain permits for the installation both from the Municipality of Guidonia Montecelio and from the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, as the medieval village is subject to protection.

It is worth highlighting that while the defibrillator in Colle Fiorito has always remained immune to damageInstead the device in Piazza San Giuseppe Artigiano in Villanova was the subject of multiple vandalisms.

After the inauguration in 2018 it was taken away from the case and, after the complaint and the public appeal on social networks by the non-profit organization, it was found burnt in the adjacent gardens. Once reacquired, the vandals on duty forced the display case.
