The revision process of the External Emergency Plans of the “Tindari” and “Capo Calavà” tunnels has been completed by the prefecture of Messina.

The activity, conducted in collaboration with the provincial command of the Fire Brigade and with the Italian railway network (RFI), was completed after a detailed review of aspects relating to safety, regulatory adjustments and emergency management, also in considering the fact that these are tunnels built at the end of the 19th century.

The work carried out has made it possible to mitigate the risks deriving from possible accident scenarios, speeding up rescue operations and trying to intervene in the shortest time possible thanks to the adoption of measures which involve the use of RFI personnel who are always available and, at the same time, to the use of rail equipment and vehicles that can be used from the stations closest to the tunnels.

The law enforcement agencies, the Railway Police, the metropolitan city, the regional Civil Protection department, 118 and the municipalities involved also participated in the review, expressing full satisfaction with this important result.

After this phase, the Plans will be tested to test their effectiveness and immediate activation with all operational components through real exercises, the first of which has already been scheduled for November 2024.
