G7 Puglia: the Pope, the future of the world and more bags and ties?

The next G7 summit will be held in Borgo Egnaziain Puglia, from 13 to 15 June 2024. The Prime Minister, Giorgia Melonihe chose the maison Talarico as the official partner for gifts to be delivered to Heads of State and Government. While gifts include leather bags, silver cufflinks and uniquely crafted ties, there is an opportunity to innovate and promote messages of sustainability, social inclusion and valuing local resources.

This year’s G7 will not only address crucial issues such as climate change, global security, post-pandemic economic recovery and social equity, but will also mark a historic moment with the participation of Pope francesco, invited for the first time to offer ethical guidance in discussions about artificial intelligence. Meloni underlined the importance of having the Pontiff present to make a decisive contribution to the definition of a regulatory, ethical and cultural framework on AI. His presence is seen as a symbol of the G7’s commitment to putting man at the center of technological development.

The security measures adopted for the event are impressive. Italy has decided to do sotemporarily suspend the Schengen agreement, reintroducing border controls from 5 to 18 June. Additionally, a Samp/T missile battery, withdrawn from Kuwait, will be deployed to protect the summit before being sent to Ukraine. This advanced system is capable of intercepting and destroying a wide range of aerial threats, demonstrating Italy’s commitment to event security.

Despite these extraordinary preparations, there is one aspect that is perplexing. While we discuss crucial global issues and take unprecedented safety measures, we continue to offer participants the usual bags and ties from the usual supplier. This choice appears inadequate and unrepresentative the context and importance of the event. In an era where every detail can be a powerful message, the opportunities to innovate and show a concrete commitment to sustainability and innovation are many.

It could have been done better. Sustainable gifts, produced by local startups, immersive cultural experiences, each choice could have reflected the main themes of the summit and showcased Italy as a cutting-edge country. For example, bags and accessories could have been made using recycled materials, such as plastic recovered from the sea and regenerated fabrics, created by social cooperatives or recovery communities, supporting work inclusion and environmental sustainability. Involving Apulian artisans to create unique gifts, such as hand-painted ceramics, traditional textiles or jewelry made from local materials, would enhance Italian traditions and the regional economy. Furthermore, collaborating with young Italian artists and designers to create sustainable works of art or design objects, made with natural materials, would have represented Italian innovation and creativity.

In a context where every detail is a message, attention to detail should be a priority. Italy had the opportunity to demonstrate that even in small things you can be great, but it chose to remain in the comfort zone, losing a precious opportunity for innovation and representation.
