“Summer in Music 2024”, the Goldberg Quartet in Miramare

06.09.2024 – 11.41 – A sea of music, strong emotions and a spectacular location were the characterizing elements of the first of the four eagerly awaited concerts of the “Estate in Musica 2024” series, an initiative proposed by the Società dei Concerti di Trieste and made possible thanks to the MIC-General Directorate of Entertainment and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
For theinaugural event which was held Saturday 8 June 2024 at Miramare castle a young group of musicians was chosen from Trieste, the Goldberg Quartetcomposed of Jingzhi Zhang And Giacomo Lucato on the violin, Matilde Simionato to the viola and Martino Simionato on the cello. Despite the young age of the members, the ensemble has already been winner of Many awardsfrom the “Piero Farulli”, to the 42nd “Franco Abbiati” Italian Critics Award, to the Special Jury Prize at the “Marcello Pontillo 2022” Competition.

The string quartet was born in 2021, as a study group, during the second wave of the pandemic, when concerts and the musicians’ opportunities for growth were really scarce. The name chosen by the young musicians is not accidental. It is a tribute to JS Bach’s Variations, a piece very dear to the four members, which binds them deeply and manages to express the ideals that these talented guys would like to achieve. In the “Goldberg Variations” Bach demonstrates that starting from a simple theme it is possible to build sound buildings comparable to great architecture. Simplicity, ease of communication, but at the same time refinement, are in fact the basis of their music-making.

The performance, much appreciated by the large audience present, highlighted the remarkable abilities of the four performers, who were applauded for a long time. The magical notes of Giuseppe Verdi and Maurice Ravel made the evening unforgettable. In fact, in the first part of the concert, the song proposed was “quartet in E minor” by Giuseppe Verdi, written in the spring of 1873 and the only surviving chamber music composition in the Verdi catalogue. In the second part of the musical performance, however, what enchanted the audience with the grace and sweetness of the musical themes proposed was the “quartet in F major” by Ravel, dedicated to Gabriel Faurè and completed in 1903. At the end of the sold-out event, the string quartet gave the audience an encore, performing “the first movement” from Beethoven’s Opera 95, perhaps less lively, but still engaging.
