“By now every limit has been exceeded. The traffic situation in the hilly municipality, which includes the districts of Vomero and Arenella, where around 120 thousand Neapolitans live, has become impossible. This morning there was yet another clear testimony of the total absence of the offices and staff that report to the traffic departments and the municipal police, delegations entrusted respectively to the Cosenza and De Iesu councilors, with notable repercussions on both noise and air pollution, with presumable repercussions on the health of the residents, forced to live in a real invalid.”
The serious situation that has arisen after the latest measures that have modified the traffic system, particularly in the Piazza degli Artisti area, but with repercussions extending to a large part of the road structure of the hilly municipality, is denounced by Gennaro Nuovi, engineer , president of the Hill Values Committee, former president of the Vomero district.
“Notoriously – underlines New Year – the traffic on the hill, on Saturday, is already chaotic. But in recent times, in a fundamental junction for the road system, which affects the traffic on the entire area, i.e. that which develops between Piazza Medaglie d’Oro and Piazza degli Artisti, passing through Via Tino di Camaino, the already chaotic situation has significantly worsened due to two questionable measures which have totally modified the pre-existing traffic system. The first, with the partial pedestrianization of Piazza degli Artisti near the entrance to Via Luca Giordano, so that, at present, all the cars arriving in the square are forced to funnel, in single file, into the narrow network of streets which, through Via Recco, where there is also a market open-air street, including food products, and via Sturzo lead to the area of the Collana stadium, as it is no longer possible to either make the roundabout around the square or get to the upper part of Vomero, via via San Gennaro ad Antignano and via Merliani. The second, more recent, with the creation of a sort of plastic roundabout in Piazza degli Artisti, at the entrance to Via Tino di Camaino, in order to restore the transit of the only public road transport line, which, before the pedestrianization, to go back, entered the square while now it has to revolve around a plastic structure which, given its size, is carried out with quite a few difficulties.
This morning – says New Year -, around midday, the classic straw occurred that broke the already full camel’s back. In fact, a bus on line 147 that was reversing the direction of travel around the aforementioned roundabout was blocked by a car left parked in the center of the road, with immediate repercussions on the entire area involved, horns blaring and related noise pollution.
Unfortunately – New Year reports – another serious aspect, confirmed in this circumstance, is the observation that, within the hilly municipality, in this part of spring, the traffic police have completely disappeared, especially in the areas with the greatest traffic. They are no longer even seen in Piazza Vanvitelli, which once represented a constant garrison. Just as the crane wagons which, before the provision was launched with which the partial pedestrianization was implemented, were permanently stationed in the center of Piazza degli Artisti, have disappeared.
In consideration of the serious repercussions that the current situation is causing, not only on safety but mainly for the presumable repercussions on the health of citizens – underlines New Year -, since the municipal administration has so far shown itself to be completely deaf to the appeals launched by the residents, also with public demonstrations, so that the previous traffic system in Piazza degli Artisti is restored, revoking the pedestrianization but also providing for greater and more assiduous control by the municipal police, I launch a public appeal to the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Naples, Nicola Gratteri, to evaluate, also in light of what is documented and documentable, the existence of the conditions for the opening of a fact-finding investigation into what has been exposed, also to safeguard health and safety, for the consequential measures”.
