They made it, parents hug their children: the five Haitian children stranded in their country of origin for bureaucratic reasons, they arrived in Italy today from their home adoptive families.

«With the outbreak of the war in Port ou Prince we experienced the hardest months. We didn’t know how to get out of it. But now Christian and here with us, he is playing with toy cars with his dad». It’s an emotional story, interrupted by lumps in the throat, what Silva Giraldi, mother of one of the foster couples of the 10 children from Haiti, describes the story as a happy conclusion, which came with the arrival of the children in Ciampino. The children’s passports were obtained last night in Haiti. Silvia and her husband Massimo, as well as the other eight couples, had so far only seen their children via video call.

At 10am the plane landed, the nightmare was over

The situation was resolved thanks to the intervention of the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The situation in Haiti, it is necessary to remember, is currently one of extreme social and health emergency, crime holds the country in its hands and violence is the order of the day.

The children from Haiti had been adopted by four Italian families, three from Veneto (Padua, Verona, Vicenza and Rho) and one from Lombardy, but, although all the documents were in order, the Embassy did not allow them to leave. Today a flight, perhaps a special flight, will land on Italian soil, giving these children and their adoptive parents a new beginning.
