QATAR MUSEUMS AND THE MUNICIPALITY OF VENICE SIGN A CULTURAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC COOPERATION AGREEMENT

The agreement follows Qatar Airways’ resumption of direct flights between Doha and Venice, the ‘city on the water’

DOHA, Qatar, and VENICE, Italy, June 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Qatar Museums and the Municipality of Venice today announced the signing of a Cooperation Protocol in which they agree to strengthen existing relations and improve collaboration in the cultural field and socioeconomic.

The agreement coincides with Qatar Airways’ announcement of the resumption of direct flights between Doha and Venice on 12 June, and with the celebration, in the ‘city on water’, of the start of the Art for Tomorrow conference, presented by The Democracy & Culture Foundation together with founding partner Qatar Museums.

In recognition of common interests, Qatar Museums and Venice will organize activities that enrich their cultural heritage, improve the conditions of knowledge and mutually promote entrepreneurial investments, particularly in the fields of art, conservation, sports and entertainment. Examples of possible activities may include the development of exhibitions and seminars to explore the historical links between Italian and Islamic art and architecture, the participation of their artists in international festivals and exhibitions, academic collaborations such as the production of artistic publications and the joint organization of research-focused visits dedicated to librarians, archivists and historians, the promotion of connections between sports organisations, the display of collections and the joint organization of thematic seminars, as well as mutual cooperation for protection and regeneration of cultural heritage, including the exchange of information and the implementation of structural interventions aimed at restoring some symbolic parts of the city of Venice.

Named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, Venice has played an essential role in world culture for centuries. Since 1895 it has hosted the Venice Biennale, which welcomes artists and nations from all over the world to exhibit together with their colleagues in what has become the most important event in the world art calendar and which, thanks to cultural tourism, brings to the city significant economic growth.

The partnership builds on the strong relationship between Qatar Museums and Venice, forged through numerous successful collaborations over the past two years. Qatar Museums is the organizer of the exhibition Your Ghosts Are Mine, Expanded Cinemas, Amplified Voices, currently underway at ACPPalazzo Franchetti, which can be visited during the 2024 Biennale Arte and the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, as well as the sponsor of the exhibition Kengo Kuma: Onomatopoeia Architecture at ACP-Palazzo Franchetti during the 2023 Architecture Biennale. The works of art loaned by Qatar Museums are currently on display in Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere, the main exhibition of the 2024 Venice Art Biennale, which includes objects from the Mathaf collection of works by the main modern Arab artists, and in the exhibition The Worlds of Marco Polo at the Doge’s Palace, with objects from Islamic art museums. The latest edition of the Art for Tomorrow conference on global cultural issues will be held in June 2024 in Venice, with the participation of Qatar Museums as a founding partner.

The Cooperation Protocol will have a duration of five years, until the end of 2029, and by mutual agreement may be extended beyond this date. Detailed information on the activities organized by the two parties will be made available as soon as it is available.
