Kiev market delegation visiting the Central one in Florence

Florence, 7 June 2024 – A delegation from Besarabka marketlocated in the center of Kiev in Ukraine, visiting the Historic Central Market to talk about the future of their space and to lay the foundations for joining the international association led by the covered market of San Lorenzo. Participating were the president Yanina Gavrilova, the head of tourism and food and wine Vyacheslav Areshchenko and the director Diana Shamarai who were welcomed by the president of the Consortium of the Historic Central Market Massimo Manetti. The delegation, as explained in a note, spoke about the difficulties of supply and those linked to trade, the costs of products which have skyrocketed since the beginning of the war and the desire to look to the future. “We are trying to defend the historicity of our market and we are here to understand if there are the basis for joining the international association. We are convinced that all together, within a group, we are stronger and have more of a say” , said Gavrilova. Meanwhile, the process for establishing the association continues with ten members from all over the world already joining: from the Boqueria in Barcelona to the Torvehallerne Kbh in Copenhagen, from the Nishiki Market in Kyoto to the Norwegian Oslo Mathallen, from the Swedish Malm› Saluhall to the English Market of Cork (Ireland). And again, Berlin with Markthalle Neun, Jerusalem with Mahane Yehuda Market, Riga Central Market and Santander with the Mercado de la Esperanza as well as the Meq of Follonica, the Victuals Market of Livorno and of course the Historic Central Market, leader of the project. The next step will be the operational meeting on 28 June, then the drafting of the association’s statute and in 2025 the request for recognition UNESCO.
