In the afternoon of 6 June, in the presence of the Interregional Commander of South Western Italy of the Guardia di Finanza, Army Corps General Rosario Lorusso and of the Regional Commander of Sicily, Division General Cosimo Di Gesù, of the Prefect of Caltanissetta, Dr. Chiara Armenia, and the Mayor of the Municipality of Caltanissetta, Arch. Roberto Gambino, the naming ceremony of the square in front of the driveway entrance of the “Cap. Enrico Franco” naming it, “Largo Fiamme Gialle”, decided by the Municipal Administration as part of the initiatives to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Corps.
Also speaking at the event were the acting President of the Court of Appeal, Dr. Giuseppe Melisenda Giambertoni, the Attorney General, Dr. Fabio D’Anna, the Chief Prosecutor of the Republic, Dr. Salvatore De Luca, the Police Commissioner and numerous Civil and Military Authorities of Caltanissetta, as well as a large representation of the Fiamme Gialle of the Nissena Province in service and on leave.
During the short but heartfelt ceremony, together with HE the Prefect and the Mayor of Caltanissetta, the Interregional Commander of South Western Italy of the Guardia di Finanza, Army Corps General Rosario Lorusso, spoke and expressed his thanks to the Authorities present and to all members of the Corps of the province of Nisse who daily commit themselves to reaffirming the values of legality. Gen. Lorusso also recalled how naming a city street after the Fiamme Gialle is customary in many Italian cities where the Corps barracks are located and recalled the memory of the soldiers of the Alpine Rescue of the Guardia di Finanza, who recently fell in service in province of Sondrio and the sacrifice of Fin. Sc. Scontrino, who died in Caltanissetta during the bombings of July 1943.
The event was also the opportunity to proceed with the delivery, by the National Councilor of the National Association of Italian Financiers for Sicily, Gen. B. (aus.) Umberto Rocco, of the meritorious member card to Dr. ssa Maria Grazia Vagliasindi, former President of the Court of Appeal of Caltanissetta, who underlined the non-fungibility of the Guardia di Finanza as an economic-financial defense of the country and the irreplaceable contribution of the Corps to all the activities of the Judicial Order in the field criminal and civil.
The event had its culmination in the unveiling of the toponymic plaque naming the Largo Fiamme Gialle, by HE the Prefect of Caltanissetta, together with the Interregional Commander, the Regional Commander of Sicily and the Mayor of Caltanissetta with the solemn blessing officiated by Mons. Onofrio Castelli, Vicar General of the Bishop of Caltanissetta and by the Military Chaplain Don Antonino Pozzo who recited the Financier’s Prayer.
The ceremony, which is part of the celebrations connected to the 250th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Guardia di Finanza, concluded with the delivery, by Mr. Rosario Gentile, President of the Civic Association of Fire Fighting Volunteers of Xirbi (CL), of a tree of olive trees intended for the “repopulation” of the Franco Barracks Park as part of the polis ecological redevelopment project. The importance of this moment was underlined by the Provincial Commander of Caltanissetta, Col. Stefano Gesuelli, precisely because the Xirbi Fire Fighting Association was the first to intervene and control a dangerous interface fire, which developed last summer in the Park of the Franco Barracks.
