Yet another prisoner attack on a policeman

Alessandria prison: yet another attack by an inmate on prison officers at San Michele

Last Saturday yet another episode of violence against Penitentiary Police personnel occurred in Alessandria prison.

Yet another episode of violence in the San Michele prison where, on Saturday 1 June, an inmate attacked a Penitentiary Police officer.

The aggression

In the afternoon, a prisoner of Tunisian origins asked to make a phone call to his family but, once the cell was opened for him, he went to the barrier of the isolation department to communicate with the isolated prisoners. Recalled by the officer, the inmate turned against him, insulting him and verbally attacking him, before pushing him and punching him in the face.

“We believe the time has come for politicians to become aware of the fact that in Italian prisons there is a very serious security problem due to some inmates lacking even the most basic rules of education and disregarding the laws of the state. – reports Sappe’s secretary for Piedmont, Vicente Santilli – the attacker is a person with a long prison sentence which, alternating with some periods of freedom, began in 2010.
During his prison career he was the protagonist of more than 100 serious episodes of damage, fire and violence against staff, not to mention the attacks on other prisoners and the almost 70 disciplinary proceedings registered against him.
In cases like these we believe that a firm stance is necessary on the part of the institutions with the introduction of new rules which will update a Penitentiary Regulation now fifty years old and, in permitted cases, also provide for the extradition of the subjects who do not intend to comply with State Laws.”

Recalling Sappe’s commitment to proposing the opening of a political debate on the topic, Santilli added: “We were recently welcomed by the Prefect of Vercelli and we are also waiting for a meeting with the Prefect of Turin, because we believe that the problem is not just inside the prison.
Statistics tell us that crimes against the Public Administration are on the rise, characterized by violence and resistance to public officials, but crimes within the family are also on the rise and we believe that this denotes a certain drift in the principles and values on which it is based. the history of our country”.
