Important recognition for the Complex Operational Unit of Neurology/Stroke Unit of the ASP of Ragusa. SITS International (acronym for Safe Implementation of Treatments in Stroke) of the prestigious “Karolinska Institute” in Stockholm, together with the European Stroke Organization, has awarded the Unit directed by Dr. Antonello Giordano the “Platinum Awards”, an award aimed at the Italian Stroke Units with the best performances in the acute management of cerebral stroke.

“This recognition – comments Giordano – is a medal for the work of the Neurology team, which, let us remember, has the strength to carry out intravenous thrombolytic treatment in the hospitals of Ragusa, Vittoria and Modica; but also to multidisciplinary team gamewhich involves the Admission and Emergency Medicine and Surgery and Radiology operational units, with a common commitment that has been going on for years with the aim of increasingly improving stroke care”.

The introduction and application of the Diagnostic Therapeutic Assistance Pathway (PDTA) for Stroke by the ASP have resulted in a reduction in the mortality rate (the figure is lower than the national average) and treatment times (also in this case below the national average), as well as a increase in the number of recanalization interventions (more than 120 have been performed in 2023).

“I would like to thank – concludes Dr. Giordano – the staff of the UOC of Neurology of Vittoria, Ragusa and Modica, all the doctors, nurses, technicians and social health workers, coordinated by Angela Vicenzino, who contribute daily to achieving these goals. Each award coincides with the improvement of patient care, and this is the most important objective we strive for every day.”

Praise for the Neurology/Stroke Unit also comes from the Extraordinary Commissioner of the ASP of Ragusa, Dr. Giuseppe Drago, and by the company Health Director, Dr. Raffaele Elia, who underline “yet another goal of good healthcare expressed by our ASP, as noted by third-party bodies of international importance. The PDTA for the treatment of Stroke is a pride of the Company. We thank Dr. Giordano and his team for their efforts in this procedure which often turns out to be life-saving.”
