The World Social Work Day 2024 organized by Croas Calabria, in collaboration with the Calabrian universities and the Department of Juvenile and Community Justice, represented an opportunity to discuss together with the institutions the theme of Good Living and change to achieve a common future. A concept in full harmony with the responsibilities of social workers and with the affirmation of the principles of defense of the common good and social equity, of the promotion of the culture of subsidiarity.

Many speakers followed one another during the meeting, analyzing issues of justice and social policies, among the various focuses the well-being of the community, environmental sustainability linked to a new humanism, collective responsibility against foreignness and dominant capitalism. Over 300 participants followed the works, full of content and ideas on alternative models of development, whose replica is available in a video on Youtube.

The introductory greetings of the President Cnoas Rosina and the Director Uiepe Molinari reiterated the importance of social activity, of its socio-political dimension, of a highly qualified professional community to support people.

The President’s words and other interventions

The words of the President of Croatia Calabria Danilo Ferrara: “We need a global and integrated approach to overcome the throwaway culture, moving towards a culture of popular education, a paradigm shift, following the lessons of Bauman and Pope Francis, to create community empowerment, a healing community”. Prof. Rita Cutini (Lumsa) recalled the war and geopolitical scenarios affecting the planet and the need for an expanded vision to achieve peace, as did the national councilor Elma Battaglia, who insisted on the value of the experience of social workers. Precious were the reports by Prof. Antonio Samà (Unical) on the urgency of counteracting oppressive practices and finding organizational solutions, alternative frameworks to what was the failure of the neoliberal paradigm and globalization, and by Prof. Cleto Corposanto (Magna Graecia) who emphasized the society of countability and performance, of the cultural boundaries that determine the physical ones. The vision of the secretary councilor Francesca Mallamaci on the concepts of beauty and fragility as opposed to inhuman and dehumanizing methods in accompanying people, in particular women and minors, is central.

Closing the series of reports were Deputy Director Rocco Scicchitano regarding the transformative change of justice, Unirimi Rector d. Ennio Stamile who focused on the concept of humanitas recalled by the encyclical Pacem in terris and the good practices existing in Calabria, and Prof. Giuseppe Cinquegrana on the need to rediscover through the relationship with the land and its own traditions the basis for remaining models of society and for a new human constitution.
