Slow Food Umbria, giant olive trees and freshwater fishing: discovering Lake Trasimeno

(Re)discovering Lake Trasimeno with Slow Food Umbria, which for Sunday 30 June has organized a day dedicated to learning about freshwater fishing, ancient crafts and the giant olive trees present in the Umbrian lake basin. The event, called “Lago e filo”, consists of a hike and boat excursion as part of the “Slowly” project.

Monica Petronio, president of Slow Food Umbria, explains the goal of the initiative and illustrates the program in detail: “An event organized to raise awareness of Lake Trasimeno as much as possible, from different points of view. Both with regard to sustainable fishing, which became a Slow Food Presidium in March, and to discover the ancient crafts that were carried out in the lake environment. For this reason, we will visit the historic Zoppitelli company where the processing of marsh reeds took place, then transformed into roofing or shading, guided by the expert explanation of environmental guides Barbara Gizzi and Laura Cristofani. Afterwards, we will visit the village of San Feliciano, where fishermen carry out the activity of processing fish and where it will be possible to take part in a convivial moment with a lunch at the Slow Food Producers Market, with the possibility of visiting the Fishing Museum. In the afternoon, an excursion aboard the fishing-tourism boats of the Cooperativa Pescatori del Trasimeno towards the island of Polvese, to discover the centuries-old olive trees with biodiversity expert Roberto Mariotti. The olive trees on the island, in fact, are almost unknown species and different from those found in the rest of the territory. Upon returning, in Sant’Arcangelo, there will be another convivial moment with an aperitif at sunset on the lake, as the initiative also takes place as part of the sunset festival.
