Biology with biomedical curvature, a path for high school students

BRINDISI – The Fermi-Monticelli high school of Brindisi and the Pepe-Calamo of Ostuni have joined the strengthening-orientation path “Biology with biomedical curvature”, promoted by Fnomceo, the National Federation of the Orders of surgeons and dentists, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

Today in the Perrino hospital thirty third year students of Fermi-Monticelli in Brindisi visited the Transfusion Center and Radiology accompanied by teachers Lucia Di Paola and Paola Daniela Scalzo. Present were the general director of the ASL, Maurizio De Nuccio, the president of the Medical Association Arturo Oliva and Vito Fumai, one of the two coordinators of the route, with Giuseppe Colucci for Ostuni, delegated by the Order to organize the medical part.

“This is a very important project – said Oliva – which started in 2017 on the initiative of a high school and the Medical Association of Reggio Calabria. In Italy, 105 out of 106 orders and more than 300 schools are involved. The project envisages, starting from the third year of high school, an extracurricular ‘biomedical’ address, which accompanies students towards faculties in the medical area. One hundred and fifty hours in total divided into three years of teaching, including frontal lessons with biologists and practical lessons with doctors delegated by the Order, and field visits to clinics, hospitals, research laboratories, specialist studies. The kids learn to understand the doctor’s work and to evaluate their own motivations.”

“The project – added De Nuccio – is the signal that the synergy between the institutions, in this case Local Health Authority, Medical Association and school, is essential. Only a concerted commitment allows children to experience school not only as an environment dedicated to learning but also to professional growth. In this way, today’s young people will be able to become the new professionals of tomorrow.”

Fumai underlined that “the students see part of what is done in the hospital: a small seed that we hope can grow and lead to an informed choice”.

Normally one in seven boys enters the Faculty of Medicine: among those who have taken the “biomedical curvature” course, the percentage rises to one in two, maximum one in three. The course provides scientific skills, a valid study and research method and encourages the acquisition of skills in the biological field.

“The initiative – concluded Oliva – is possible thanks to the precious and constant collaboration of the institutes, school managers and science teachers who guide the students during the final three-year period. My thanks also go to the general director and colleagues who make their skills available free of charge to animate the course of study”.
