VARESE, 6 June 2024 – 10 years after the last edition, ‘At the DES FAIR’, the provincial fair of the Solidarity Economy, returns: for the first time in Varese, nin the marvelous setting of the Estensi Gardens. The organizer of the event is the Solidarity Economy District of Varese (DES Va), an association that since 2005 has promoted opportunities for collaboration and meetings with the realities that animate the solidarity economy of our province.
“We have been dreaming of bringing the fair back to the area for a long time; the financial support of the Cariplo Foundation and the patronage of the Municipality of Varese – with the splendid opportunity of the Estensi Gardens as the venue for the event – have given us the right energy to try this year.” Comment Marco Bonetti, president of DES Varese. “The satisfaction was immense when we saw the participation of 80 exhibitors, the maximum capacity we had set ourselves.”
“For an association like ours, the organizational costs of a fair are onerous, which is why we organized a self-financing prize draw – mainly with local products – and Saturday 8 June it will be possible to purchase tickets in Corso Matteotti, where we will set up an information stand.” says Bonetti. “The first prize? A chef at home! The real kilometer chef, Salvatore Palmeri. An expert professional with knowledge of many agricultural realities of Varese, who cooks true delights while describing the products and the territory. Only for one evening though.”
But what is the solidarity economy?
The solidarity economy is an economic model that promotes production, distribution and consumption practices based on principles of equity, sustainability and solidarity. It focuses on the well-being of people and communities, rather than profit, encouraging cooperation, social inclusion and respect for the environment.
The DES fair it will be an extraordinary opportunity to meet the various local realities of the solidarity economy, from fair trade to social agricultural cooperatives, through responsible tourism and ethical fashion, the protection of human rights and the environment, with a careful eye also on renewable energy and sustainable mobility.
About DES Va, Solidarity Economy District of Varese
The DES Va ETS is an association active in the Varese area since 2005. It counts among its members Solidarity Purchasing Groups (GAS), fair trade shops, social cooperatives, agricultural companies, associations, artisans, professionals.
The district aims to experiment and consolidate forms of solidarity economy through the development of a local solidarity network, the promotion of culture on related issues and the development of projects and activities to support local realities. The objective is to create production, distribution and consumption systems based on the principles of the solidarity economy, which place the value of people and relationships before profit, respect human rights and legality, and protect the environment and biodiversity.
