CAMPO DI MARE – “I am writing to you to report the state of degradation in which the village of Campo di Mare is found. I frequent the place and the beaches every summer, but I have never found the place so neglected as this year. I thought that before the summer season they would fix it and perhaps clean the beach and collect the rubbish in the streets, but unfortunately this was not the case. Today, 22 June, we went to the seaside with the children like every weekend.” Thus begins an email sent to the editorial staff of this newspaper by a resident. Campo di Mare is a marina south of Brindisi under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of San Pietro Vernotico.

“Firstly, on the way to the beach we came across very tall grass that probably hasn’t been cut for several months. The stairs to the beach are full of piled up rubbish and the flowering plants lining the stairs are so grown that to pass you have to go down in single file, trying to dodge the flowers. Arriving on the beach we found a pile of rubbish, in the absence of special bins. Weed in the middle of the beach and a lot of rubbish on the seashore a place with such a beautiful sea and such large beaches is so neglected. I hope that by writing this email we can do something to remedy the situation.”

But the town is not doing any better. Via Azzurra, the road that leads to the nearby Torre San Gennaro marina, is in a total state of decay and abandonment. There are piles of bulky waste and grass over a meter high. Just take a walk in the marina to realize the situation.
