Gandolfo Miserendino he is the extraordinary commissioner of Azienda Zero appointed directly by the president of the Calabria Region Roberto Occhiuto in the capacity of commissioner ad acta for the implementation of the plan to reduce the deficit of the Calabrian healthcare sector. He is a 47-year-old Sicilian, computer engineer, previously director of the digital transformation department at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. He should (the conditional is a must) be one of those super managers called to resolve the problems of Calabrian healthcare. He is paid handsomely to do so and sometimes also to apologize for the many, many inconveniences that the Calabrians have to deal with. This alone would have been enough to close the case reported by Codacons yesterday but Miserendino did not do so, revealing the inhuman face of Calabrian healthcare which at the top levels of Azienda Zero is evidently all talk and propaganda.
Let’s summarize the facts: an 86-year-old elderly man, disabled and seriously ill, tries to book an urgent cardiological visit complete with an electrocardiogram at the Pugliese-Ciaccio in Catanzaro quickly but the possibility is denied and someone invites him to contact the director, almost like giving alms. The indignant gentleman turns to Codacons which makes the incident public and writes to the leaders of Dulbecco, the ASP of Catanzaro and the president of the Calabria Region Roberto Occhiuto, the latter also commissioner of Calabrian health. The reply arrives late in the evening from the governor’s press office but it is the super commissioner of Azienda Zero who speaks: “Regarding a note with which the Codacons reports the alleged case of an elderly patient, disabled and seriously ill, who would have been denied the possibility of booking an urgent cardiological visit in a short time, a clarification must be made. The patient in question has a dematerialized prescription with a specialist outpatient service in class B (short, services to be performed within 10 days). The performance although not available at the ‘Pugliese Ciaccio’ in Catanzarothe requested structure can however be provided on 5 June at other structures, including the Nocera Terinese Pst, the Soveria Mannelli Hospital, the Lamezia Terme Hospital and the Maida Pst”.
So far the back and forth between Codacons and Azienda Zero. In the middle, however, there is an 86-year-old who risks dying and to whom the National Health Service has denied the possibility of a simple, ordinary, banal visit to the hospital in his city, Pugliese-Ciaccio. The super manager paid handsomely with the money of the Calabrians replies that there are other accredited structures that can fulfill his request. The closest one is twenty minutes from Catanzaro. It’s a shame, however, that the patient in question is over eighty, he doesn’t have a car and doesn’t have a driver. He is an 86 year old man, disabled and seriously ill, as underlined by Codacons. Miserendino’s response is miserable and she speaks for herself. He reveals the true face of a healthcare system that looks at the numbers and no longer at the person and is the classic piece that does not cover the hole but fuels the controversy. An own goal for Roberto Occhiuto himself, who should know that the days of the megagalactic directors at Cobram of Fantozzi’s memory are over and passing the responsibilities on to his subordinates without putting his face to it is a tactic that no longer works.
