The last similar initiative dates back to January 2022, when the Cuneo lawyer Antonio Sartoristogether with his wife, displayed two banners: one on the balcony of the house in Corso Nizza and the other on the balcony of the Delfino Foundation, overlooking Piazza Galimberti.
The writing was a “No Berlusconi”: a clear position with respect to the debate on Silvio Berlusconi’s candidacy for the office of President of the Republic.
This time the banner has a completely different tone: it is, in fact, an exhortation to go and vote, “Let’s vote”, exercising a right which for many is also a civic duty. To the side stands the Tricolore, the Italian flag, in that square which yesterday was the setting for the Republic Day ceremony.
The issue of abstentionism has been of interest to public debate for years. And it especially involves young people. It is interpreted on the one hand as disinterest and distrust, on the other as an act of protest. The high number of non-voters raises doubts about the degree of legitimacy of the representative system. There is also the non-voting party, which includes abstentions and those who left their ballots blank. More than among the abstentions, it is here that the protest is most evident: in the choice to go to the polls and not to give one’s preference to any candidate. In the non-voting party, however, invalid ballots are not counted.
Going to vote is the invitation/appeal that many candidates are making in view of the elections on 8 and 9 June. We vote for the European elections. In Piedmont also for the renewal of the regional government and, in Granda, also for 171 municipalities. Among these, Alba, Bra, Fossano and Saluzzo, four of the seven sisters.
