The four conferences (in attendance only) will be held by Prof. Arch. Franca Pittaluga, freelancer and lecturer at the IUAV University of Venice at the headquarters of the Order of Architects of Treviso in Piazza delle Ittici – block H, 31100 Treviso TV .

1_Friday 14 June, 4.00pm-6.00pm – THE PATHS OF LIGHT

A first dive into the project, documenting numerous examples of architecture, mostly contemporary, which demonstrate in fact an inevitable rule: the conquest of natural light within the spaces that the architect is creating cannot be achieved in the design phase of attention to detail, but on the contrary, the real traps of light that we can organize are all in the first sketches of a large-scale project: in the drawings that determine the volumetric structure of the whole, the organization of the facades, the availability of the roofs. And above all, these design thoughts that are being outlined must favor the use of sections, sections… and more sections.

2_Friday 21 June, 4.00pm-6.00pm – DIALOGUES OF LIGHT & SPACE

A second dive into the project is dedicated to evaluating the quality of light that the architect intends to bring into the spaces he is designing: in fact, operating with a lot of or little light, with open or narrow, looming or confidential light, is a strategic choice and must therefore assumed from the beginning of the project. To measure the desired quality, we can operate with 3 simple variables: dosage, focus, direction. To evaluate the results, we will observe spaces that you have all experienced since your early university years: designed by Le Corbusier, Terragni and Lingeri, Frank Lloyd Wright, Luigi Moretti, Louis Kahn, alongside others closer in age such as Luis Barragan, Eladio Dieste, Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry.

3_Friday 28 June, 4.00pm-6.00pm – THE ADJECTIVES OF LIGHT

The entry of light into a building is often the main agent of characterization of spaces: intimate or solemn, dynamic or still, mystical or worldly spaces are perceived as such depending on the choices made by the designer on measurements, proportions, materials; but the ways in which our gaze perceives them depend on the way in which the spaces are highlighted. The designer works intentionally on this, especially in section, to more effectively intercept the natural path of the sun. The adjective (unusual) that I assigned to the last project analyzed here (solid) testifies to a stubborn work to achieve a harnessed, full-bodied and intense light to the point of appearing to be a truly solid light.

4_Friday 5 July, 4.00pm-6.00pm – THE MOON IN THE WELL

Structured on a few but more in-depth examples, a study on underground architecture, comparing three archaic and three contemporary architectures. All are under (or in) the Earth’s crust, and are built to accommodate water inside them. An opportunity that man takes to characterize sacred and symbolic spaces, or profane and utility spaces, placing two elements that have common characteristics in direct dialogue. First of all, that of not having a shape: water in fact only has the shape of its container and, like light, is arranged in the space that is offered to it. We will be able to observe it in a symbiosis with the light which becomes true complicity to create secret, suspended, rarefied, sometimes transcendent spaces.
