PESARO For the huge tax fraud on the Catania-Pesaro axis it is the day of the guarantee interrogations. And the couple in prison that the investigators suspect of being the top of the association chooses a big name as their lawyer, namely Giulia Bongiorno, senator and current president of the Justice Commission.

We are talking about the “High Level” operation which involved over 140 financiers from the provincial command of the Catania Financial Police to deliver the warrant notices to 33 suspects and carry out 16 precautionary custody orders carried out in the provinces of Catania, Syracuse, Ragusa , Enna, Palermo, Milan, Brescia, Rome and, of course, Pesaro, where Carmelo Salvatore Di Salvo and Maiuccia Copia were arrested.

The couple has chosen Giulia Bongiorno and the lawyer Granata from the Catania bar as lawyers. Bongiorno has defended many well-known personalities in complex criminal proceedings. Above all Giulio Andreotti then, among others, Gianna Nannini, Ezio Greggio, Tiziano Ferro and the basketball coach Simone Pianigiani as well as Raffaele Sollecito in the context of Meredith’s murder in Perugia. Today the suspects, locked up in the Villa Fastiggi prison, and questioned by Catania magistrates connected via video, could avail themselves of the right not to answer. Salvatore Di Salvo di Canicattì, 53, believed to be at the top of the criminal association, allegedly made use of two Catania consultancy firms, one legal and one administrative, for the management of the business networks.

The interrogation

The accusation of being the promoter and organizer of the system is instead contested against Mariuccia Copia, owner of a law firm of the same name. According to the investigators, Di Salvo was the mastermind of a complex fraud system, fueled by the creation of 14 business networks, of which 37 companies with the function of “seconding agents” were part, operating in almost all Italian regions. According to the accusation, with the mechanism implemented in five years the turnover of the companies managed by Di Salvo would have reached over 61 million euros, for which the taxes and contributions due for approximately 25 million euros would not have been paid.

The couple had arrived in the city a month ago, renting an apartment in Viale Triestev and bringing cars, including a Lamborghini Urus with Luis Vuitton interiors worth 800 thousand euros and two Porsches now seized together with a large quantity of cash for 85 thousand euros, bags designer labels, jewels and Rolexes. In Catania they had instead left gold ingots. Among the questions to be answered why they chose Pesaro to try to replicate that “system”. They had already rented an office on the Adriatica highway. But the financial police arrived first.
