The surveyor from Cercino Carlo Maletta, born in 1967, is the victim of the accident that occurred today in Meina, in the province of Novara. The man, according to initial reconstructions, was working on a railway construction site along the Milan-Domodossola railway line when, for reasons still being ascertained, he was crushed by a machine. For him, despite the arrival of rescuers, there was no escape.

The episode once again brings to light the problem of safety at work and the reaction of the trade unions of the province of Sondrio was not long in coming.

Fillea Cgil, Filca Cisl and Feneal Uil have in fact issued a harsh press release, of which we report the full text:

“We have learned the tragic news once again. Another worker from the province of Sondrio joins the tragic number of deaths at work; the fatal accident occurred on a construction site in the province of Novara. A 56-year-old worker was crushed by machinery. Unfortunately, the chain of fatal accidents continues. Feneal, Filca and Fillea gather around the worker’s family and express their sorrow for what happened.

At the same time, we are denouncing the too many “white deaths”, too many victims that are counted every day in the world of work. Feneal, Filca and Fillea are forcefully calling for the problem of safety on construction sites. Enough with these massacres, enough with workers who go out to go to work and do not return home to their families. We believe it is necessary to wait for the relevant bodies to carry out all the necessary investigations to verify any responsibilities. We must not lower our guard on the issue of prevention, on safety in the workplace and on the training of all the figures who work in the workplace because it is a duty that safety becomes a priority on construction sites and in all workplaces. Everyone’s contribution is needed.

Having the reduction of accident risks as a goal means a joint and constant commitment in monitoring the workplace, it is necessary that all the figures within the work chain collaborate with each other, also involving the bodies responsible for prevention and safety. In this way, the skills and experiences of the various subjects can identify the most effective way to combat too many victims and too many accidents at work”.
