Cremona celebrated the Italian Republic Day on June 2nd in memory of the 1946 referendum with which Italians chose their own institutional form. A historic date also because for the first time in Italy women also participated in a national political consultation: the results were proclaimed by the Court of Cassation on 10 June 1946: 12,717,923 citizens in favor of the republic and 10,719,284 citizens in favor of the monarchy. In a square of the Municipality crowded with people from Cremona, institutions and mayors, the speeches of the authorities were held (first of all the reading of the message from the head of State, then the speech of the Prefect and the mayor of Cremona), the national anthem, platoons of soldiers and police marched. Many Italian flags, emotion at the flag raising. “June 2nd is a celebration that unites everyone but we must be careful not to underestimate it not only for its historical significance but because it has a truly profound meaning. We celebrate being part of a community“, said the prefect Corrado Conforto Galli. This year the Italian flag was unfurled from the municipal water tower, towards Piazza della Pace and not from Torrazzo as in previous years.
