BARI – The evacuation of approximately eight thousand residents in the red zone identified in an area of 430 meters from the construction site in via Spalato in Foggia began at dawn where a war device was found which will be removed during the morning. The plan is coordinated by the prefecture with the participation of law enforcement, firefighters, local health authorities, the municipality and the Red Cross.
The volunteers of the Radio Club Marconi civil protection provided transport for people with reduced mobility from their homes to those of relatives or to reception points. Many left when it was still dark. «I live right next to the bomb – says a resident -. They were weeks of fear. I hope it ends soon. Now I’m going to my children and then we’ll see.”
Some left their homes last night after the water was disconnected, followed this morning by the electricity and gas connection. All the cars in the red zone have been moved. The area is monitored by the police.
The use of remotely piloted drones is also planned to avoid any incidents of profiteering. The sound of sirens will mark the beginning and end of the removal operations.
An assisted medical station of the military red cross with healthcare personnel has been set up in Piazza Cavour in the city center. The reception points welcome people who have nowhere else to spend the hours needed to remove the device which will be detonated in a quarry in Lucera, a municipality about 20 kilometers from Foggia.
