The earthquake that struck i Campi Flegrei last May 20th caused serious damage to Pozzuoli women’s prisonleading to its temporary closure and the need for significant renovations. Lucia Castellano, provider to prisons in Campaniaannounced the situation, underlining however the importance of the structure and the intention to keep it operational in the future.
Castellano specifies “the prison of Pozzuoli it represents a piece of the city, an excellence that we want, just as we don’t want to give up the activities that have allowed inmates to embark on rehabilitation paths such as chocolate making and tailoring”.
The earthquake caused afissure framework” which requires a program of complex structural interventions. The closure of the prison, second Castellano, it will last a few years, during which the necessary consolidation and renovation works will be carried out. This long closure period is essential to ensure the safety and functionality of the facility once reopened.
Currently, land 140 female prisoners were evacuated and redistributed mainly to other facilities in the region, with 110 of them received in Campania prisons. The remaining prisoners were transferred to other regions, awaiting a more stable solution. Prison officers also had the opportunity to choose, compatibly with staff management needs, the location where they would work temporarily.
During the recent trade union demonstration in front of the Neapolitan prison of Poggioreale, some unions accused the management of unilateralism in decisions regarding the management of the emergency. However, Castellano denied these accusations, stating that all decisions were communicated and shared with the unions representing the agents. He specified that he had missed only one meeting, having however informed in advance of his absence.
