Cerignola criminal gang arrested
The Foggia police recently completed an important operation, culminating in the arrest of eight people accused of being part of a gang specialized in aggravated thefts against post office machines and ATMs, robberies, thefts in commercial establishments, and possession of weapons and explosives. The investigations, started last February, involved around 80 officers engaged in carrying out arrest orders in the city of Cerignola.
The investigative activity, conducted by the staff of the local flying squad and the Cerignola police station, under the direction of the Prosecutor’s Office, made it possible to identify the members of the gang, responsible for numerous attacks not only in the province of Foggia, but also in Basilicata, Campania and Abruzzo. The criminals operated with their faces covered and armed, using homemade explosive devices, known as “marmots”, to access the money deposits. The attacks caused serious damage to the affected buildings and created strong social alarm in the communities.
Before each assault, the criminals meticulously studied the areas of interest, planning routes, escape routes and the positioning of video surveillance cameras. After the attack, they quickly fled in powerful cars, often stolen or rented, throwing spiked bands on the asphalt to prevent the police from pursuing them and endangering the safety of the policemen.
During the investigations, several devices, wigs used to disguise themselves, burglary tools and approximately 11 kilos of explosives were seized. Furthermore, the stolen cars used to carry out the thefts have been recovered and already returned to their legitimate owners. Among the goods stolen from businesses were scratch cards and tobacco products, which were subsequently resold on the black market.
The operation was triggered following several robberies which had aroused strong concern among the population due to the use of weapons and the significant damage caused to local businesses. Thanks to the commitment and professionalism of the investigators, it was possible to dismantle the well-structured criminal organization specialized in this type of crime.
Local authorities continue to work to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent further criminal acts. The collaboration between different law enforcement units proved crucial to the success of the operation, demonstrating the effectiveness of a coordinated and integrated approach in the repression of crimes.
