The “soul” of the Teachers’ College is on stage in Trieste

Almost 2 thousand participants, 180 speakers, 671 posters presented, these are the numbers of the 31st edition of the Congress of the Teaching Body University students of odontostomatological disciplines entitled: Sustainable and predictable dentistry in the public and private sectors.

As per tradition, the inauguration of the Congress was, beyond the institutional moment, also an opportunity to take stock of various issues that link universities, political institutions, the dental profession and above all patients.

The University, especially today, is or at least should be one of the allies available to the SSR to provide those oral health answers that citizens ask for and cannot find, in Friuli Venezia Giulia it is, but there are difficulties in making it real.
Difficulties that arise from a poor attitude of politicians to “think” in the long term, as admitted by the Government of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region Massimiliano Fedriga when he says that we must invest in prevention even if it is a long-term investment while, today, a short-sighted policy tends to invest in issues that give short-term results. The need to invest in prevention was also reiterated by the AIO president Gerard Seebergher.

Public dentistry but also private dentistry which must pay particular attention to the people most in difficulty, trying to make their professionalism available also “to those who struggle to draw on your care and expertise”, recalled Mgr. Enrico Trevisi bishop of Trieste.

Then there are the issues that link the profession to the university world, starting from the training activated on ethical and management issues in collaboration with the CAO and the battles that can be played together, as recalled by the president of the national CAO Raffaele Iandolo. Battles to give dentists the opportunity to acquire a second degree in medicine and doctors to acquire a second degree in dentistry and to establish which is the most correct training, the one which better than others can certify the dentist’s competence to carry out aesthetic medicine procedures.

The intervention of the AISO president could not be missed Matilda Ruozzi which recalled the need for synergy between teachers and students especially in this transition phase towards the qualifying degree.

Among the institutional greetings also that of the ANDI regional president George Balich, Mario Zearo for UNIDI, the President of the National University Council Andrea Lenzithe president of the CPCLOPD Livia Ottolenghi. Congress of the College in conjunction with that of the degree courses in Dental Hygiene, as testified by prof. Mario Giannonipresident of the graduate courses in dental hygiene, who called for more dignity for dental hygienists even in public dentistry.

But the inauguration of the Congress was above all an opportunity to retrace the 33 years of the College of Teachers which today brings together, recalled the outgoing president Roberto Di LenardaMagnificent Rector of the University of Trieste, the highest number of members expressing a climate of dialogue, esteem and collaboration. College, recalled Professor Antonella PolimeniMagnificent Rector of the Sapienza University of Rome and past president of the College, who contributed, and not without difficulty and effort, to making the dental discipline grow, bringing it to the values ​​of excellence that it is today.

The Lectio Magistralis of Professor Elettra De Stefano Dorigo (titled “I was there”), the first secretary of the College and then the first female president who had the task of “managing”, after 20 years of presidency of the prof. Dolci, “the new course of the College”. A transition, she says, not easy but that after 20 years, “found its strength in the valorization of autonomy and in the development of research“.A lucid and precise story that starts from 1978 when Europe imposed the dental degree to standardize the various qualifications present in the member countries necessary to practice the profession of dentist, and then retraces all the salient moments of the “young” life of the faculty of dentistry and the College, of the dental profession until reaching that goal, an objective immediately declared by Professor Dorigo: to train dentists who knew how to treat their patients, aware of their social function and how important the smile is.
