Popular Alternative in Palermo, Alaimo: “A Manifesto for Italy in Europe”

Palermo was the scene of a significant demonstration, organized by Alternativa Popolare to underline the presence and importance of the movement in the area. The event saw the participation of numerous citizens and supporters, united by the belief that Europe is fundamental for Italy’s future.

“Participating in the European elections is not only important, it is indispensable,” declared Alfonso Alaimo, regional coordinator of Popular Alternative and candidate in the next European elections. “We must make citizens understand that today nothing is achieved without Europe. Even national budget laws, before being approved, must pass through European scrutiny. Europe is the sole regulator of our lives as a community. Whether it’s fishing, tourism, agriculture or renewable energy, Europe is the only way.”

Alaimo reiterated his firm opposition to the idea of Italexit, calling it “unthinkable”. “Europe is the main road and Alternativa Popolare has a clear vision on how to live within this great European family. Our recipe for a stronger Italy in the European context includes the creation of a European army, which can guarantee us independence and autonomy to defend ourselves, not to attack. We are absolutely for peace, but it is essential to have the ability to defend ourselves if necessary.”

The regional coordinator also proposed the establishment of a European Foreign Ministry, to allow Europe to speak with one voice on the world stage. “It is no longer acceptable to have 27 nations acting independently and often divergently. Europe must become a single nation.”

Alaimo then addressed the issue of the 4% threshold, seen by many as a difficult obstacle to overcome. “We must not fear the 4% threshold. Indeed, this represents a great stimulus. Since we were excluded from any communication context, openly violating the law on equal conditions, our president Paolo Alli pointed out this injustice to the President of the Republic. Thanks to this complaint, we began to be noticed and probed, and our secretary Stefano Bandecchi began to participate in numerous television and media programs. Since then, we have been growing. The polls confirm this. It’s not yet time to talk about concrete numbers, but our dream is becoming reality.”
