The 2024 Theater Biennale, a space of desire and wonder

Venice, 17 June. (askanews) – “If we cannot imagine a better and more harmonious world, we will never have the necessary means to rebuild it”. The two directors Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte started from here to give life to the 52nd edition of the Biennale Teatro, entitled “Niger et Albus”, at the end of a four-year period of artistic direction characterized by colours. A festival that continues to investigate the boundaries of today’s theater and opens spaces to young authors alongside big names on the international scene.

“It’s contemporary theatre, but theater in general is tied to our existence and existence is changeable, so trying to cage or understand if there is that type of theater or another. Theater is the time we live in and therefore we adopt the tools available. And today’s theater will certainly seem obsolete in five years, precisely because it feeds on everything we can breathe around us, outside the theater. So I think I’m leaving what is an x-ray of what these four years have been, of the possibilities that theater offers on a global level.” Stefano Ricci, in tracing an image of the contemporary scene, somehow also draws an overall assessment of the four-year period, in which the Biennale Teatro moved with courage and attention to many different voices.

Years that have also changed the directors themselves, as Gianni Forte told us: “These four years have helped me a lot to be able to examine myself too. For years they have helped me understand many things, things that I had put aside, things that I had hidden inside myself and didn’t have the courage to bring out. I believe that these years have helped me a lot to regain confidence in myself, it’s something that I had neglected a bit.”

The 2024 Biennale Teatro opened with the Anglo-German collective Gob Squad Theater and its show “Creation”, an irrepressible reflection on life, time, the work of art and the sense of the stage. A show that translates the will of the festival to be “a space of desire, wonder, crossroads of debates and comparisons”. Which is probably the best thing we can hope for.
