Meloni: «Do I lose the referendum? Who cares, I’m not resigning”

OfPaola Di Caro

The Prime Minister on «In half an hour»: «We are not understanding each other, I will reach the end of the five years»

Someone, evidently, he didn’t get it. This is what the prime minister must have thought after her words spoken at the Trento Economics Festival (“The reforms? Make or break, I’m not here to warm the seat”) had led to the idea of her possible resignation in the event of a rejection of the referendum on the premiershipwhich will most likely be held given that a two-thirds majority is expected to be missing.
In fact, yesterday, speaking on In half an hour, Giorgia Meloni explained: «The idea of the referendum doesn’t scare me and I will never consider it a referendum on me but on the future of the country». Then, to be even clearer: «If the referendum doesn’t pass, is it a problem? Who cares. Am I ready to resign if the referendum is rejected? No. I reach the end of 5 years and I will ask the Italians to be judged. If the reform does not pass, the Italians will not have shared it. Everything else is the hopes of the left.”

On the other hand, the prime minister is convinced that the country’s economic results will prove her right, and this is the most important objective: «The Stability Pact has a temporary phase of return, it is sustainable on paper». If anything, it won’t be his fault, he puts his hands forward: «The disaster is in the 220 billion hole for having mainly renovated second homes, with the Superbonus we find ourselves in difficulty on many other fronts. The government will do everything it can to keep its commitments».
The rest is dedicated to international themes. Starting from the alliances after the European Championships. What Meloni excludes is any pact with the left: “Never.” While he seems optimistic about openings even on the far right: «I’m not used to certificates of presentability. My main objective is to try to build a centre-right majority and send the left into opposition in Europe too. I think what rainbow majorities produce are downward compromises. We are not in a historical period in which we can afford a Europe with downward compromises, and the rainbow majorities are compromises, of a weak Europe.” Who to build this majority with remains to be seen, given that President von der Leyen said she was against openings to Le Pen or similar parties: «I have with Ursula, as normal as it is, a relationship of institutional collaboration as with everyone, to I’m only interested in bringing home the results”, says Meloni with a certain detachment.

Toti and the investigation in Liguria

We then move on to Israelwith a middle position: «The lack of empathy towards the Israeli victims scares me», which demonstrates «latent anti-Semitism“, says the leader of FdI, immediately adding, however, that the Israeli government must also not “fall into the trap” of the fundamentalists and must instead “respect international law», to arrive at «two peoples and two States» as soon as possible.
Finally, it ends with the Toti case: «I – says the prime minister – have not had the opportunity to speak to him and it is difficult to get a clear idea of this story. For the future, I would like, and this applies to everyone, that months do not pass between when there is a request for precautionary measures and when it is carried out. Don’t wait for election campaigns.”
