Fiumicino, 26 May 2024 – “In recent days we have witnessed the laying of the foundation stone of the commercial port. The work was presented with great fanfare by the mayor Baccini, the President of the Port Authority Musolino and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Salvini as a major investment by the State that will bring employment and development. The Committee has always considered it necessary to provide safe accommodation for fishing boats, law enforcement agencies and sea rescue vehicles which have been operating for years in a condition of insecurity in the current canal port. We therefore say Yes to the Fishing Port and the Darsena Servizthe whys answer to a need for safety of maritime operators and therefore a real need for the territory”. “At the same time we say no to the second and third lots of this port, i.e. the piers for large cruise ships and ro-ro ships (ferries and container ports). We oppose these functions – continues the Committee – for the same reasons why we are against the project planned for the Lighthouse: need for massive dredging and consequent devastation of the marine ecosystem and increase in coastal erosionlack of logistical structures for induced traffic, noise and air pollution with serious consequences on the quality of life and health of people and on the local economy based on local tourism.

For these reasons we ask the Port System Authority of the Central-Northern Tyrrhenian Sea to review the Masterplan approved with the Port Master Plan to reduce its impact on the territory and the projection into the sea, remodulate the intended uses to put it at the service of fishing, environmental rescue and emergency vehicles, law enforcement agencies and local shipbuilding, in order to encourage production settlements in suitable areas, freeing up spaces for the city in areas of urban (darsena) and environmental (fossa traianea) value. With the start of work on this project (in reality the construction site has been open for months but now we are in the election campaign) what many citizens were unclear about has come to fruition, that is, that there are two ports that they want to build, unless two kilometers away from each other.

At the same time the big one also emerges contradiction of the Municipal Administration led by Mayor Baccini – conclude the Tavoli del Porto – who on the one hand exalts the creation of a state port and on the other favors a project, that of the Fiumicino Waterfront, of a foreign investment fund, which is in open competition with public ports, nullifying state investments.
