The May 25, 2024 marks an important date, celebrated globally as the International Day for Missing Minors. On this occasion, the Police Headquarters of Alessandria participates in various initiatives aimed at raising awareness and informing the community on the importance of preventing and addressing the disappearance of minors.

The International Day for Missing Children was established in memory of Etan Patz, a six-year-old boy who disappeared in New York on May 25, 1979. This tragic event gave rise to a worldwide movement that developed new search methods, such as the use of photos on milk cartons in the 1980s.

This year, the State Police launched a campaign in collaboration with the AMBER ALERT Europe Foundation, entitled “Check. Reflect. Report… and don’t waste time call the emergency number 112″. This campaign provides useful advice to parents on how to act immediately in the event of a missing child. Knowing what steps to take at such critical times can make a significant difference.

The Central Anti-Crime Directorate of the State Police has made information materials available, including a leaflet and a bookmark, distributed in schools and during public events. These materials were created in collaboration with the Central Directorate for Scientific Police and Cyber Security, and aim to educate young people and parents on uncomfortable situations and the risks associated with episodes of disappearance.

An important resource for searches for missing children is the Italian site https://it.globalmissingkids.org, part of an international network coordinated by ICMEC (International Center for Missing and Exploited Children). This site allows you to insert images of missing minors and update their photos with age progression techniques.

Furthermore, the single European number 116000 is active, a direct telephone line for missing minors managed by the SOS Foundation Il Telefono Azzurro ETS. This service offers immediate support and advice to families involved in disappearance cases.

The Alessandria Police Headquarters has organized a special event for May 28, 2024 in Piazza della Libertà, under the arcades of Via San Giacomo della Vittoria. Staff from the Anti-Crime Police and the Cyber Security Operations Center of Alessandria will be present, with an information gazebo and the distribution of educational materials. Some classes from local schools will participate to explore the topic of safety and prevention.

This day is a reminder of the importance of being vigilant and ready to take action to protect our children. Awareness and education are essential tools in the fight against missing children, and the initiatives of the State Police and partner organizations represent a significant step towards greater safety for all.
