The construction of the cenotaph for the perpetual burial of the Pistoia painter has been completed in the Main Cemetery Umberto Buscionicoinciding with the fifth anniversary of his death.
The cenotaph, made of Carrara marble and inspired by a drawing by the same artist, is located in a space granted by the municipal administration.
The city council in 2021 had unanimously approved a motion on the perpetual burial of Umberto Buscioni presented by the councilors of Fratelli d’Italia, Pistoia Concreta and Forza Italia – Centrists for Europe. The municipal council with resolution no. 375 of 23 November 2023 had approved the placement of the cenotaph inside the Main Cemetery in via dei Campi Santi.
«We extend special thanks to the municipal administration – said Umberto Buscioni’s children, Marta and Piero – for having granted the space to build the cenotaph, which in the future will house our father’s remains».
Umberto Buscioni, born in Pistoia on 13 July 1931, died on 6 May 2019. With his friends Barni, Natalini and Ruffi he formed what the critic Cesare Vivaldi defined as the Pistoia School, considered one of the most notable Italian responses to Pop Art. A painter known and appreciated throughout the world, Buscioni, through his long and personal artistic itinerary lasting almost half a century, has raised the name of the city of Pistoia in Italy and in the world.
