The Santa Maria Goretti hospital in Latina loses a “column”. In fact, Maurizio Trimarchi, a nurse for years on the front line of the emergency room and for some time in service in the ENT department, has died. Originally from Rome, he lived in Sermoneta and in the hospital he was a point of reference for many colleagues who needed trade union councils. He was one of the activists of the USB (basic trade union) and there was no shortage of opportunity to highlight the difficulties linked to workloads – particularly in the emergency sector – to the overcrowding of the emergency room, to safety, to the need for period of the pandemicmeal vouchers, the recognition of overtime, the difficulties in guaranteeing shifts during holiday periods.

There was no dispute on which he backed down, indeed sometimes he clashed with representatives of other workers’ organizations because he was not used to giving up. Always with a smile on his lips. The same one he had for his patients, despite that surly look that might appear when seeing him. It was enough to talk to him for a few minutes and he immediately got on well. With journalists, then, he had a relationship of trust like few others, aware of the delicate role he played and of the need for the news to be spread. And there was no shortage of jokes, while he smoked a cigarette, in commenting on news about the many announced “revolutions” in the hospital which in fact solved nothing. He was 65 years old and had recently discovered that he had cancer. He died this evening, May 22, in the emergency room, the place for which he had fought the longest.
