Campagnolo power meter: the details and how it works

Is called High Precision Power Measurement (HPPM). An acronym that identifies the first Campagnolo power meter unveiled last April 4th.
HERE is our news.

The potentiometer features a “spider-based” without magnet. It means that the electronic platter is anchored to the four arms of the Super Record WRL crankset near the Ultra-Torque titanium half-axle.

There crankbuilt in unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber, is available in three lengths: 170, 172.5 and 175 mm.

This framework identifies the essential technical characteristics of an innovation that follows the first attempt dating back to 2011 (photo below) when Campagnolo relied on SRM to build a power meter dedicated to 11v drivetrains.

The SRM hand also returns in HPPM, albeit in a lesser form.
The German company, in fact, provided consultancy and technical support to this project of the Vicenza company which today shines with its own light: from design to production through engineering.

2011. Campagnolo in collaboration with SRM applies the power meter on a high-end Ultra-Torque crankset.

A supply chain that Campagnolo wanted to implement to obtain a high precision product (accuracy +/- 1%) dedicated to the demanding cyclist who intends complete the features of the Super Record Wireless group.

Let’s get to the bottom of it…

Campagnolo power meter: compatibility

The gears, made of aluminum alloy, describe three combinations: 45-29, 48-32, 50-34.

Campagnolo HPPM is compatible withSuper Record Wireless ecosystem and in the 50-34 configuration also with the Super Record EPS 12v group.

Changing the gears (bolt circle 121/88 mm) is allowed as long as it remains within the 12v standard.
Replacement occurs simply by unscrewing the bolts as on any Campagnolo crankset (8 Nm tightening torque). Calibration (zero-offset) is then necessary.

However, it is not possible to update the Super Record WRL crankset by applying the HPPM spider: shapes and technical specifications are different.
The Campagnolo power meter is accordingly a stand-alone platform.

Important note, the crankset has a on the inside of the minor gear code which identifies the compatibility (shown in the table below) with the other elements of the transmission group.

Calibration and operation

The power meter turns on after a few full rotations (the LED stays on for the first 200 rotations) and goes into Sleep mode (sleeping) after five minutes of inactivity.

Below is the table to code LED color and mode.

Campagnolo suggests the calibration:

– at first installation;
– after 100/150 km;
– before each use on the road (recommended operation).

It is also possible to carry out the operation via the cycle computer equipped with the Ant+/Bluetooth protocol which will be used during the ride.

Furthermore, thanks to theMy Campy 3.0 appit is possible to view real-time data (power, balance, strength, cadence), calibrate the system, update the firmware and check the charge status of the battery which has an estimated duration of 100 hours of use.

If the operating temperature must be between -20°C and +60°C, some additional attention must be paid to the minimum temperature during charging (10°C/45°C).

This operation is activated thanks to the magnetic connector (photo below) combined with a power supply with 5V 2A output and is in line with the declared times.

In a couple of hours at a temperature of 19°C it goes from 30% to 100%. The magnetic connector is easy to insert and transmits without difficulty/overheating.

Campagnolo power meter: how does it fare on the road?

The detection has always proven itself stable and in line with the values recorded by the Shimano meters used up to a few days before the test.
Easy and immediate pairing with the app and the Garmin 840 Solar.

In a not exactly easy moment for the power meter market (see the closure of Stages Cycling), Campagnolo takes a courageous step and presents a complementary solution to the high-level Super Record Wireless groupset characterized by an elegant aesthetic with fiber of visible carbon.

What is certain is that a powermeter a 2,240 euros price list doesn’t sound like an incentive…
