From the Bari Oncologist to Nairobi for precision medicine

From Bari to Nairobi to study personalized medicine. The biotechnologist researcher of the “Giovanni Paolo II” Cancer Institute, a scientific hospitalization and treatment institute, Debora Traversa, is in Kenya to participate, together with 12 other researchers from African countries, in the second edition of the EU Consortium Summer school -Africa PerMed, a three-day event of scientific insights which began on May 21st and will end on the 24th. Traversa is the only non-African researcher who will participate in the initiative in the field. The other 12 selected, in fact, come from Ivory Coast, Ghana, Madagascar, Tunisia, Congo, Morocco and Tanzania, Senegal, Ethiopia and Somalia.

The Bari oncology researcher Giuseppe De Palma will also participate remotely in the meetings, selected like his colleague Traversa by the Commission of the international consortium for personalized medicine, of which the Ministry of Health is also a member.

“Our two researchers – states Director General Alessandro Delle Donne – will live a training and exchange experience with the aim of improving and sharing the knowledge and skills that will allow them to evaluate the impact of personalized medicine in the healthcare system, but above all it will be an opportunity for the Cancer Institute to enter a new EU-African Union research network to seek synergies to promote our research projects by strengthening science, technology and innovation”.

Fundamental for this participation in the project was the role of the Coordinator of the research activities of the Scientific Director Raffaella Massafra, capable of promoting connectivity between researchers, the Ministry of Health and international bodies.

“Once again our Institute – declares the President of the Steering and Verification Council Gero Grassi – is confronted with international research, this time towards the countries that are on the other side of the Mediterranean and which are part of the African continent”.
