The new connection from Padua Interporto to Livorno Guasticce is underway

from Brevi railwaye dated 17 May 2024

Press release Interporto Padova

The first convoy of the new intermodal relationship with the Amerigo Vespucci Tuscan Interport of Livorno Guasticce departed regularly yesterday, May 16 in the afternoon from the Padua Interporto terminal – despite the weather emergency that hit the Veneto. The train is produced for Trans Italia by Logtainer and the traction is entrusted to Mercitalia Rail.

The relationship envisages, for now, two weekly circulations and allows the transport of 25 swap bodies, but in the future, as soon as the Pontremolese railway line has the necessary gauge, the convoys will be loaded directly with semi-trailers. Trans Italia, which has grown to have a network of 30 business units in Italy, Europe and North Africa, is a leader in Europe in intermodal transport by land and sea, with a fleet of over 2,500 vehicles and is particularly committed to developing intermodal relationships by rail which allow the use of road vehicles only in the first and last mile of transport. The double weekly circulation allows the equivalent of 100 trucks per week to be taken off the road, on a very congested motorway section and the emissions savings in the WTW (Well-to-Wheel) perspective, referring to the entire life cycle of the fuel, achievable through the use of the train as an alternative to all-road transport, is equal to 77%.

The new train is multi-customer and is particularly interesting for companies that have commercial relations with Spain: it is in fact the continuation by rail of the already well-established relationship of Trans Italia from Livorno to Valencia and to the rest of Spain using the sea connection ro-ro by Grimaldi (which uses “green” ships with hybrid propulsion). In Spanish territory, with the railway operator Tramesa, Trans Italia will launch the first intermodal semi-trailer service in the Iberian country in the autumn, from the Port of Valencia to the capital Madrid. The goods that will leave from the North East through the Padua Interport will be able to travel the entire route up to the Spanish capital by rail and ship, truly limiting road transport to the last mile. Obviously the Interporto Padova – Livorno Guasticce relationship also allows relaunches towards other destinations.

The launch of this relationship underlines Trans Italia’s great commitment to making the transport of goods increasingly sustainable, limiting CO2 emissions thanks to land and sea intermodality, reducing road congestion, and facilitating the work of its drivers. Exactly what the most environmentally conscious companies ask of those who organize and manage the transport of goods on their behalf.

Interporto Padova for its part, confirms its reliability and vocation for sustainable logistics at the service of transport companies, MTOs and railway companies, thanks to intermodality, but also with the digitalisation and automation of procedures and processes that allow reducing costs to a minimum. times for transporters to cross the terminal and by choosing to power the gantry cranes with self-produced electricity with an innovative photovoltaic system with storage battery.
