«They were scared, very cold and completely in shock», say the carabinieri Marco Perin and Stefano Silvio Cau, who are part of the Schio Company. The two chosen notes, special qualification, both in their forties, on Wednesday evening they saved two women who were stuck with their car in a flooded underpass along Viale Europa Unita, in Schio. Torrential waters, due to the flooding of rivers and canals caused by the abundant rains of the previous hourshad invaded the road, creating a “lake” of mud and debris.
The request for help
«The call arrived just before midnight, the women had phoned 112 asking for help – explain the two soldiers -. They were agitated, they said they were stuck inside their small car and couldn’t get out because the water was too high. We were in the area and intervened immediately. When we arrived on site we realized we couldn’t get too close, we left the car service to about fifty meters away.” Then Perin and Cau, without hesitation, immersed themselves in the icy waters. Their only concern at that moment was to bring to safety the two women in difficulty, who were unable to get out of the car in any way, and in the meantime the water level had reached the height of the windows. It wasn’t easy for the two carabinieri to make their way through the debris and the current, but they managed to reach the two women, reassure them and free them from the vehicle.
The call to say thank you
«We took them out of the windows – reveal the two officers – then we picked them up and made them safe. They kept thanking us. Fortunately they were completely unharmed, for them there was only a lot of fear.” Yesterday morning, after recovering from the nightmare night, the two ladies they called the operations center of the Schio Army Company and with their voices breaking with emotion they thanked the two carabinieri who saved them. «For us it was just a dutyindeed in turn we thank them for their gratitude”, conclude the heroes in uniform.
