“We will therefore be in the streets because we want more and we want it now: in accordance with the WHO guidelines, medical abortion should be possible up to the 12th week of pregnancy in clinics and at home. We are far from this goal, today more than ever, and it is our health that loses out” highlights the Not One Less Movement.
“Today, not only are the clinics insufficient, but they no longer perform many of the functions for which they were created, they have been emptied of their political purpose to become in many cases little more than clinics.
Last April 23, the Senate passed the amendment, proposed by MP Malagola of Fratelli d’Italia, to Legislative Decree 19/2024 which provides for and strengthens the access of anti-abortion associations to counseling centers by including them in the distribution of funds of the National Recovery Plan and resilience (PNRR) which concerns the financing of local healthcare. The national legitimation of anti-abortion associations to operate in clinics is placed in an already tragic reality: public funding for private clinics managed by Catholic and anti-abortion associations has long existed in Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Umbria, Marche, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, while public ones are closed, emptied of staff, incorporated into health homes, thus depriving us of free, secular, open and accessible socio-health facilities. Law no. 34/1996 and also the recent Ministerial Decree n. 77/2022 provide for 1 clinic for every 20,000 inhabitants, while at a national level we have now reached 1 clinic for every 45,000/75,000 inhabitants and many of the multi-specialist offers (support for pregnancy, postpartum and menopause, pharmacological abortion, contraception, prevention, youth space) are ignored almost everywhere
This amendment, in addition to representing an improper use of PNRR funds – as also underlined by the European Commission for Economic and Financial Affairs – does not bring any improvement to public health, but reinforces the already existing link between government leaders and anti-abortion associations fundamentalists.
The attack on the right to abortion also goes hand in hand with the questioning of the health of trans and non-binary people: in January the inspection at Carreggi on the use of triptorelin and the subsequent creation of a technical table – promoted by ministers Schillaci and Roccella – for the evaluation of the use of this drug leave no doubt that these initiatives also bear the signature of anti-abortion organizations such as Provita and Famiglia. We are and will always be on the side of every woman, trans or non-binary person who decides to terminate the pregnancy or who decides to continue it, because no one can impose their beliefs or ideals on the lives and bodies of others. We are and will always be on the side of those who fight to claim their own self-determination: we are alongside those who contested Minister Roccella at the General States of Birthrate a few days ago and at the Turin Book Fair last year, as well as those who protested at the University of Catania against the transphobic conference. We reiterate once again that no one can decide about us: neither the Church nor the State and that we want to cross the spaces of health without fear, without judgment and without abuse, trusting in the protection of the public and secular health system, without being penalized and without interference with our decisions”
