The monument inaugurated on Saturday 11 May, in Legnano, and dedicated to the Vajont tragedy, when in 1963 over 2 thousand people lost their lives, including 500 children and adolescents. A story that left our country shocked.
The initiative was promoted by the entrepreneur Giuseppe Calinialways animated by particular attention to many aspects of our daily life, and supported both by private citizens in raising funds to carry out the work, physically carried out by the construction company Edilsae of Legnano, thanks to the appreciated availability of the Seguino family. A successful project also thanks to the support of the three municipal administrations that have succeeded one another in recent years, with mayors Alberto Centinaio, Gianbattista Fratus and Lorenzo Radice.
In recent days, Giuseppe Calini wanted to express his satisfaction because, he writes to us, «I think that we really did a beautiful thing, a great gesture of solidarity with authentic people, true, with immense dignity, who have suffered so much and are still forced to endure so much injustice. Today, May 15, 2024, I learned that the trial files will be brought back to L’Aquila! For my part, I once again thank all the people who contributed to the creation of this monument, donated by the citizens to the city. My particular thanks go to Nicola Seguino, with his father Antonio and sister Francesca. Kind-hearted people who contributed significantly and with great generosity to the construction of the monument.”
Calini also tells us the thanks of the survivors to the citizens of Legnano, recalling that « they honor us and for the umpteenth time demonstrate the great heart of us Legnano people.”
On May 11, 2024 in Legnano the history of the Vajont tragedy, after 61 years, received an extraordinary recognition that will remain in the memory of all those who see this monument in memory of the over 2000 innocent victims.
This memory is owed to the citizens of Legnano who, thanks to the tenacity of our friend Giuseppe Calini, a true Legnanese, who for his commitment towards us in all these years, we have appointed ambassador of the Vajont Survivors, made it happen.
No one had ever thought of honoring our victims, our fathers, our mothers, our relatives, friends, who perished that night and for the most part not even found and recognized.
Personally, after many years, I have savored the feeling of having returned “home”, that home lost and never found, that feeling of friendship, of human warmth, of that embrace that I had waited for, hoped for, for a long time… I found it there, in Legnano , in front of that monument that recalls the dam, that I perceived it differently, no longer as a symbol of death but of friendship, participation, affection…
Heartfelt thanks to you people of Legnano, to the entire Administrator, to the Mayor who allowed us to have a place in your community, in your memory, in your heart.
The survivors, the survivors of the Vajont have found a place where the memory of that tragedy will never be forgotten.
