285 days, 40 weeks, nine and a half months, 6840 hours: that’s how long he had to wait Julian Alaphilippe to return to savor the sweet taste of victory. After the success in La Chaise-Dieu at the Dauphiné last year, in fact, the Musketeer had lost his characteristic pedal stroke. This Giro, in addition to a great stage, was also supposed to represent a sort of redemption for the native of Saint-Amand-Montrond. A reason for redemption. TO Rapolano Terme, on the dirt road, a great Pelayo Sanchez choked the scream in his throat. Today, however, the walls stage sealed his return to the highest level. Loulou he ran away with “Donald Duck” Maestri 126km from the finish and never looked back, taking home the glory and also the grand slam (at least one stage in all Grand Tours). The action on the tear is decisive in this sense Mount Jupiter, 10km from the end. The Frenchman let go of Maestri and took off towards victory, resisting Maestri’s return Narvaez And Quinten Hermans. It is the second stage victory for Quick-Step, the fifteenth of the season. Fifth an excellent Scaronisixth Trentin. In the general classification very little to report: very quiet day for Pogacar.

The chronicle of the stage
The Giro restarts from Martinsicuro for the twelfth stage of the race. It is the stage of the Marche walls, coveted by everyone: ranking men and escapees. The first escape attempt is led by van Sintmaartensdijk (Intermarche), Trentin (Tudor) and Paleni (FDJ), but after about 10km the group manages to close. So another one starts, inspired by Maestri (Polti), Affini (Visma), Hepburn (Jayco) and Clarke (Israel). The four find the right moment and make the hole, quickly gaining more than a minute on the pink jersey group.
Jakobsen: “Withdrawal? I haven’t slept. I’m in too much pain, I can’t run”
In conjunction with the first wall, that of Civitanova Alta (no GPM, 2.8 km at 4.7%), the delirium begins. Attacks are raining down from all sides, with Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step) to be the master. The Frenchman launches himself headlong into the snatch Montelupone (no GPM, 1.9 km at 5.8%) and returns to the lead of the race, only to attack once again and run away with Polti’s Mirco Maestri. In pursuit of them Affini (Visma), Clarke (Israel), Hepburn (Jayco), Sanchez (Movistar), Costiou (Arkea), Narvaez (Ineos), Valgren (EF), Scaroni (Astana) and Thomas (Cofidis)while the pink jersey group is reported at 3’13”.
Off to the dance! Alaphilippe goes on the run again today: relive the shot
In Recanati the breakaway gets bigger: Valter (Visma), Sutterlin (Bahrain), Hirt, Vansevenant (Quick-Step), Mezgec (Jayco), Quintana (Movistar), Verres (Arkea), Ganna (Ineos), Fernandez (Cofidis), Velasco (Astana), Calmejane (Intermarche), Smith (Intermarche), Honore (EF), Pithie, Barthe (FDJ), Oliveira (UAE), TarozziPozzovivo (Bardiani), Kamp, Trentin (Tudor), Leemreize, Vermaerke (dsm), Piganzoli (Polti), Bayer, Hermans (Alpecin), A. Paret-Peintre (Decathlon) and JuanPe Lopez (Trek), for a platoon that has 36 units.
Quintana attacks! We haven’t seen him for years… Ganna and Pozzovivo are also in the breakaway
On top of the tear of Osimo, 4th category climb (7 km at 2.3%, peaking at 4.5%), the advantage of Alaphilippe and Maestri becomes significant: +2’30” over the pursuers and +4’53” over the pink jersey group. A movement is needed, and this promptly arrives with the sprint of Scaroni and Costiou: the two take advantage of the block Villa San Paterniano (no GPM, 1.2 km at 7.5%), but a mechanical problem stops the Frenchman. So Narvaez tries again, dragging Leemreize, Clarke, Thomas, Trentin, Valgren, Hermans and Smith with him. A small group of 9 forms in pursuit of the fugitives, while the pink jersey group slips over 5 minutes late.
Alaphilippe unleashed! Narvaez and Sanchez move away: only Maestri follows the Frenchman
Monsano (4th category, 4.2 km at 4%, peaking at 6.2%) and Ostra (4th category, 1 km at 8.8%, peaking at 13.5%) they are overtaken without too many problems by both the leading duo and the nine in pursuit. There is great collaboration in the small group Narvaez Trentinbut also between Masters and Alaphilippewho in fact still boast a 1’50” lead in Ripe. Small acceleration of the pursuers on the climb of La Croce (4th category, 2.2 km at 4.2%, peaking at 5.9%), but up front we always talk about an important advantage. Behind, meanwhile, Baharain’s pace allowed the pink jersey group to rejoin the group with Ganna, Pozzovivo and Hirt.
“Mirco, how are we doing?”: Alaphilippe and Maestri believe it and collaborate on the run
It’s just missing Monte Giove (no GPM, 1.2 km at 9.2%) at the end of the stage, the last climb of the day. At the start of the climb, with 10km to go to Fano, Alaphilippe can no longer wait. The Frenchman discards Maestri and heads down the descent alone, dreaming of the stage victory. In pursuit of him Hermans and NarvaezWhile Trentin and Scaroni they waste a few seconds. This head to head holds his own until the last kilometre, then under the flamme rouge Alaphilippe stops suffering and starts smiling. It’s a stage victory for him, and also grand slam (at least one stage in all Grand Tours). Narvaez had to settle for second place, while Hermans was third. In the general classification everything is calm Pogacar.
