Bergamo, the university suspends graduation parties: too many public order problems

Plastic confetti, smoke bombs or stadium horns, shouts, insults, situations bordering on the safety of public order. For this reason, the Academic Senate of the University of Bergamo, in a communication later released by the Rector and the president of the Student Council, decided to suspend the graduation parties.

«In the last graduation session at the headquarters in via dei Caniana, a smoke bomb was even lit inside the building; this created a situation of objective danger, causing smoke to infiltrate the ventilation vents and filling all the rooms with an acrid smell. We understand that this decision may cause some frustration; We assure you, however, that we are working synergistically to find alternatives that will allow us to remember such an important milestone. We assure you that your commitment and hard work will not go unnoticed. It is our desire to find a way that allows each graduating student to be celebrated appropriately,” reads an email from the university.

Uni+ promoted a collection of signatures against the stop to the proclamation ceremonies, and on Tuesday in a few hours more than 1,200 students joined. Andrea Pagani, president of Uni+, says: «In the Senate we abstained and we have a bad taste in our mouths, but we are ready for dialogue to find a solution that is not penalizing for students. We regret that a decision like this was made before evaluating an alternative, which could be the use of a space like Polaresco with a private security service that can monitor the celebrations.”
