Trento, 14 May 2024 – The JJ4 bear, which killed Andrea Papi on April 5th26 years old, in the woods of Caldes (Trento), will be transferred by autumn to the Black Forest, where it is already found his mother Jurka, locked up since 2010. The news was anticipated by councilor Roberto Failoni to Corriere del Trentino. The bear is found in the Casteller Wildlife Centre, together with M49. Upon request, the Province specifies that the transfer, at the moment, only concerns JJ4. But what will be the future of the Centre? Opposed by animal rights activists – who initially wanted it – and by very expensive management for the Province. Is it possible that we are moving towards closure? At the moment the prospect is not confirmed.
It should be remembered, however, that the Province of Trento has legislated for theculling of problem bearspermitted by rules established in Pacobace.
Among the many reactions from animal rights activists is also that of Michela Vittoria Brambillapresident of the Italian League for the Defense of Animals and the Environment.
“I remind you that I have already expressed in good time my willingness to take charge of the bears held at Casteller and move them to Libearty Sanctuary of Zarnesti (Romania)”, he writes in a letter addressed to the president of the province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti and to the councilor Failoni. “We therefore renew – concludes Brambilla – the availability not only for JJ4 but also for M49, whose destination, it seems, remains to be defined: the place in which to let the bears live is certainly not the limited structure of the Casteller, but the sanctuary that we have already identified.”
The transfer of the JJ4 bear will be at the center of the State Council meeting on May 30th.
