Seoul resumes anti-Pyongyang propaganda with loudspeakers after new balloons with garbage

South Korea has decided to restart broadcasts of anti-North Korean propaganda over loudspeakers in border areas in response to Pyongyang’s continued campaigns on sending waste to the South in hot air balloons. The decision came after an emergency security meeting coordinated by Director Chang Ho-jin, during which officials decided to install and begin loudspeaker broadcasts in border areas starting today. The move could lead to a reaction from the North and possible retaliation with its own military measures. Only a few days ago Pyongyang decided to temporarily stop sending balloons full of garbage and manure to South Korea.

From North Korea 330 new “balloons” with garbage towards Seoul

Just in the last few hours, as mentioned, around 330 new balloons containing rubbish were launched from North Korea towards Seoul. Last week, in two separate waves, Pyongyang released hundreds of balloons loaded with garbage and animal waste. Some North Korean defectors had responded from the southern state with a shipment of ten balloons containing 200,000 leaflets against Pyongyang, USB sticks with K-pop and South Korean television series, strictly banned by the other nation’s regime. “We will install loudspeakers towards North Korea and begin transmitting messages,” the South Korean presidency confirmed in a statement, underlining that “the responsibility for the escalation of tension between the two Koreas falls entirely on the North.”

Recent tensions

In all, Pyongyang has sent more than 3,500 garbage-filled balloons to South Korea since last week in what it said was retaliation for the dropping of anti-Kim propaganda leaflets by a group of defectors North Koreans. The most immediate effect of this new escalation of tension was the total suspension of the inter-Korean pact signed six years ago. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said about two days ago that South Korea will not “stand by” in the face of “threats” from North Korean authorities. “North Korea, after firing artillery shells into the Yellow Sea and launching missiles, committed despicable acts that any normal country would be ashamed of,” he stressed.
